Chapter Ten

“Do you happen to have any idea what all this is about?” asked Jade as she followed Cedric’s assistant inside the hotel. Not knowing was making her feel quite unprepared and while not completely anxious yet, somewhere just under the surface of her emotions, she was feeling apprehensive.

“I’m sure you’ll find out in good time, Miss Lewis” said the assistant. They entered the lobby where Jade had supposed they’d meet but they walked straight through. Her apprehension increased.

Cedric’s assistant brought her to a set of large oak doors and knocked before opening one of them.

“Miss Lewis is here to see you” he said.

“Thanks, send her in” she heard a voice say; a voice which she recognised, though she’d only met him a couple of times. A voice which now made her nervous. She walked inside.

It was a conference room, occupied by a large oval table and chairs with wine-coloured upholstery.

In amongst it all, there he was. Cedric Bertram. He stood up. With his shirt open at the collar, he looked somewhat less formal than he had at the party, though more formal than he had at the shop. She couldn’t help but note that in these surroundings, he seemed more austere, more business-like, more authoritative.

He smiled and instantly in that smile, she recognised the friendly man she had been briefly acquainted with. She felt herself relax a little bit.

“We meet again, Miss Lewis” he said. He held out his hand. She walked forwards and took it. His grip was firm on hers.

“It’s nice to see you again” she said, looking up at him.

He looked back at her. His green eyes seemed to bore into her, as though he was looking deep into her soul. For a fleeting moment, she thought she saw something – a predatory look cross his eyes. The next moment, however, it was gone, or, perhaps, thought Jade, it had never been there in the first place. Fuelled by James’s mistrust him, she was imagining things. But, if it hadn’t really been there, why did she suddenly feel so hot? Why was her heart beating so fast?

He withdrew his hand from hers slowly, brushing the palm of her hand with his fingertips, all the while, never breaking eye contact.

They looked at each other for a moment longer and then he gestured to the chair behind her.

“Please, have a seat”.

Whatever spell he’d just put her under was broken. She blinked and sat down.

“Would you like some tea? Coffee?”

“No thank you”.

Her hands were clasped in her lap. Somehow, she felt like she was at a job interview.

“Are we expecting anyone else?” she asked.

“No”, said Cedric, “What makes you think that?”

Jade gestured to their surroundings.

“The conference room; it’s a bit big”.

It was certainly far too big for two people.

Cedric smiled.

“It’s just us”, he said, “I know the owner of this hotel so I thought we’d meet here. It’s a lot more private”.

“I see” she said.

“Well, Jade you’re probably wondering why I asked you here today”.

“To be honest, yes” she said.
